Essay about Christian And Pagan Ideals In Beowulf

Before the invention of the printing press or written history, oral history, especially in early Germanic culture, became the foremost means of transcribing values, and past events. Written down in approximately 1,000 A.D. by an unknown author, Beowulf, originally a pagan fable, became a Christian allegory upon its transcription by Christian monks. However, as scholars have debated over the religious context in Beowulf, the attempts by the monks to turn the epic poem into a Christian parable ended merged, including both original and Christian aspects. Throughout Beowulf, the epic combines pagan ideals of fate or wyrd and the will of God, the similar concepts of the afterlife, and the contrasting ideas of the individual. After the battle with Grendel, King Hrothgar elaborates on the mightiness of the Lord, and the salvation that He gives to the Danes in the form of Beowulf. Upon the defeat of Grendel and his mother, Hrothgar presents Beowulf with several splendid gifts, but reminds him â€Å"keep yourself against the wickedness, beloved Beowulf, best of men, and choose better-eternal gains. Foreshadowing the necessary qualities that Beowulf uses in his reign, Hrothgar reminds Beowulf to take precautions on the spoils of warfare, and avoid the deadly sin of pride. After the death of Hygleac, Beowulf rises to the throne due to his respectful and altruistic nature, not because of some divine right. This failure indicates that the forest-dweller feel and design is far away from the Nike’s high-tech image. Also, it shows that environmental friendly cannot be a unique selling point for Nike’s products. Performing well Nike’s products provide a feeling of fast, slick, and hip. Therefore, Marlboro Earth is not well sold in the world and contradicts his ordinary products. Marlboro should think carefully how to go green in the future. It may be a good idea to go green quietly as Nike did, do more any say less.

Tolstoys Three Hermits Essay Example For Students

Tolstoys Three Hermits Essay Word Count: 1731 Between 1875 and 1877, Leo Tolstoy, nobility by birth, wrote installments of Anna Karenina. While writing Anna Karenina, he became obsessed with the meaning and purpose of life. This led Tolstoy to compose the essay, My Confession, detailing his agonizing religious and moral self-examination, published in 1882. He devoted another three years to the discovery of the meaning and purpose of life. At the close of the seven years of only non-fiction essays, Tolstoy resumed writing and publishing fictional works. However, he did write two more essays devoted to the meaning of life, What Then Must We Do (1886) and The Kingdom of God is Within You (1892). Tolstoy, in 1886 wrote a particularly intriguing tale of a bishop and three old men, The Three Hermits, which reflects Tolstoys search for purpose and the meaning of life. The Three Hermits is a journey, both physical and spiritual, similar to Tolstoys faith journey. A bishop was sailing from Archangel to the Solovetsk Monastery, and on the same vessel were a number of pilgrims on their way to visit the shrine at that place (Tolstoy, p. 1). The story goes on to say that a fisherman on board relayed the tale of the three hermits who live on an island near where they currently were sailing. The Bishop becomes very curious, and insists upon meeting the hermits. The other pilgrims protest at the idea of stopping. The captain also objects and informs the bishop, The old men are not worth your pains. I have heard said that they are foolish old fellows, who understand nothing, and never speak a word, any more than the fish in the sea (Tolstoy, p.3). This passage makes an ironic point. The pilgrims travel to Solovetsk, home of a monastery considered one of the holy places in Russia, to pay homage and receive Gods favor, yet they are unwilling to learn from people close to God, much like the people of Tolstoys time, too wrapped up in the churchs doctrine to see the way to God. Tolstoy wrote in Repent ye, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand, a chapter of The Kingdom of God is Within You that Christians must aspire to the Kingdom of God, not the kingdoms of the world, meaning that the idols and relics of the church are worthless, people should instead visit God through meaningful prayer, good deeds, and work. The tale continues on to say, the cable was quickly let out, the anchor cast and the sails furled Then a boat having been lowered the oarsman jumped in, and the Bishop descended the ladder and took a seat (Tolstoy, p.3). This could be interpreted as the bishop being humbled, lowering himself on to the boat. A bishop is defined as an overseer, a supervisor, hold ing a position one rank over a priest. Therefore, he by going to the island humbled himself. The story continues in the tale by telling of the hermits, how they bowed before him, and the priests teaching them to pray, the Lords Prayer, instead of theirs, Three are ye, three are we, have mercy upon us (Tolstoy, p.4). Upon leaving, the priest in the distance hears them praying. When the island was no longer visible, he relaxed and he thanked god for having sent him to teach and help such godly men (Tolstoy, p.5). No sooner had he uttered the words than did the Hermits appear running through the water. The three in one voice said, We have forgotten your teaching, servant of God. As long as we kept repeating it, we remembered, but when we stopped saying it for a time, a word dropped out, and now it all has gone to pieces. We can remember nothing of it. Teach us again. The bishop crossed himself and leaning over the ships side said: Your own prayer will reach the Lord, men of God. Functional And Dysfunctional Conflict Commerce Essay It is not for me to teach you. Pray for us sinners. And the Bishop bowed low before the men. (p. 5-6). The hermits show a great deal of respect for the church and God, thus, they bow low before the Bishop, as a sign of respect, knowing he is Gods servant. This .

An Introduction to Representational Art

An Introduction to Representational Art The word representational, when used to describe a work of art, means that the work depicts something easily recognized by most people. Throughout our history as art-creating humans,  most  art has been representational. Even when art was symbolic, or non-figurative, it was usually representative of something. Abstract (non-representational) art is a relatively recent  invention and didnt evolve until the early 20th-century. What Makes Art Representational? There are three basic types of art: representational, abstract, and non-objective. Representational is the oldest, best-known, and most popular of the three. Abstract art typically starts with a subject that exists in the real world but then presents those subjects in a new way. A well-known  example of abstract art is Picassos Three Musicians.  Anyone looking at the painting would understand that its subjects are three individuals with musical instruments–but neither the musicians nor their instruments are intended to replicate reality. Non-objective art does not, in any way, replicate or represent reality. Instead, it explores color, texture, and other visual elements without reference to natural or constructed world. Jackson Pollock, whose work involved complex splatters of paint, is a good example of a non-objective artist. Representational art strives to depict reality. Because representational artists are creative individuals, however, their work need  not look precisely like the object they are representing. For example, Impressionist artists such as Renoir and Monet used patches of color to create visually compelling, representative paintings of gardens, people, and locations. History of Representational Art Representational art got its start many millennia ago with Late Paleolithic figurines and carvings. Venus of Willendorf, while not too terribly realistic, is clearly meant to show the figure of a woman. She was created around 25,000 years ago and is an excellent example of the earliest representational art. Ancient examples of representational art are often in the form of sculptures, decorative friezes, bas-reliefs, and busts representing real people, idealized gods, and scenes from nature. During the middle ages, European artists focused largely on religious subjects. During the Renaissance, major artists such as Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci created extraordinarily realistic paintings and sculptures. Artists were also commissioned to paint portraits of members of the nobility. Some artists created workshops in which they trained apprentices in their own style of painting. By the 19th century, representative artists were beginning to experiment with new ways of expressing themselves visually. They were also exploring new subjects: instead of focusing on portraits, landscapes, and religious subjects, artists experiments with socially relevant topics related to the Industrial Revolution. Present Status Representational art is thriving. Many people have a higher degree of comfort with representational art than with abstract or non-objective art. Digital tools are providing artists with a wider range of options for capturing and creating realistic images.   Additionally, the workshop (or atelier) system continues to exist, and many of these teach figurative painting exclusively. One example is the School of Representational Art in Chicago, Illinois. There are also whole societies dedicated to representational art. Here in the United States, the Traditional Fine Arts Organization comes quickly to mind. A web search using the keywords of representational art (your geographical location) should turn up venues and/or artists in your area.

The Missing Article

The Missing Article The Missing Article The Missing Article By Mark Nichol Omitting the article the from before the proper name of an organization or a location is a common error- even, surprisingly, in content produced by such entities. In each of the following sentences, the article is awkwardly absent. Discussion and revision of each sentence shows how to resolve the problem (unless there is no problem because of how the name is treated). 1. Young people are increasingly accessing news sources on their phones, according to Pew Research Center. To test whether an article belongs before a proper name, change the name to a generic reference, such as center in place of â€Å"Pew Research Center.† â€Å"According to center† does not make sense, so, just as it would be appropriate to insert the before center, insert it before the proper name: â€Å"Young people are increasingly accessing news sources on their phones, according to the Pew Research Center.† If the proper name modified a following noun, however, as in the following sentence, no article is required: â€Å"Young people are increasingly accessing news sources on their phones, according to Pew Research Center staff.† (The is optional if the staff have already been referred to.) 2. Heavens Gate cult committed mass suicides in California in 1997. The same test is appropriate in a reference such as this one. â€Å"Cult committed mass suicide in California in 1997† works as a headline (where articles are often omitted) but not as a sentence, so insert the before the proper name: â€Å"The Heavens Gate cult committed mass suicide in California in 1997.† However, in this case, strictly speaking, the cult members, not the cult, committed suicide, so this revision is better: â€Å"Heavens Gate cult members committed mass suicide in California in 1997.† (Here, because the subject refers to individuals, not a single entity, the test isn’t required, but the article should be included if the members have already been mentioned earlier.) 3. Spice Girls topped the music charts seven times. References to groups of performers should be treated the same way, but only if the name refers to the individuals: â€Å"The Spice Girls topped the music charts seven times.† Again, the article is not required if the name modifies a plural noun, as in â€Å"Spice Girls songs topped the music charts seven times.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Enterprise Resource Planning Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Enterprise Resource Planning - Coursework Example In the meantime the very best ERP vendors show and provide a map on how to transition their clients from their current business practice to the industry best practice and regulatory compliant processes. It should be noted that it would be in the best interest of most ERP vendors to extend the time of an implementation because it simply means a longer engagement which would assure a steady cash-flow for the ERP vendor. It should also be noted that most client companies consider their process one of the best if not the best process in the industry and that most employees or even managers and leaders of the organization’s comfort zone lies in their own legacy processes. The last two sentences are inversely proportional to the length of engagement of the ERP vendors depending on the group to which they belong (good, very good, better or the best). It is therefore noteworthy to consider that it would be in the best interest of the ERP vendor to extend their engagement with a partic ular client. There are several considerations in implementing ERP in a company, this would include acculturation and assimilation of ERP supported processes and the integration and use of the ERP in the everyday activities of the company. Thus, ERP is not simply implementing applications after application it also include change management from the corporate cultural level. The acculturation and immersion of the ERP into the culture of the company is considered the most potent critical success factor for any ERP implementation and leaving this responsibility to vendors may not be a good business decision.. An ERP implementation should not be considered as an IT project but rather a project involving the entire organization to ensure its success. All Business Process Owners and Subject Matter Experts in the organization should not only be tapped as a resource but rather they should be the lead architect in defining the scope or blue print of the entire organization’s processes and their inter-relation with each other. The ERP vendor for its part should be able to define and provide a detailed map on how to provide solutions to the gaps discovered between what is provided by the ERP solution and the blue printed business processes. During the realization stage of the ERP project or the stage where most of the development of the solutions to the gaps are resolved, extensive testing of actual data should be done by the subject matter experts and the users themselves. During data migration actual retrofitting of the data should not only be exact but their subsequent application to the system and the output that should be derived from them should be perfectly streamlined. Training should not be confined on how to use the system but the training should also cover how to resolve conflicts. The training should cover areas and subject that would enable the client to be self-sustaining and self-reliant. Go live and support should include stress testing and process exception handling to ensure that even during the most arduous conflict the entire competence team of the client would be able to resolve and provide solution to the conflict if not a temporary work around. Given the above, ERP clients or potential clients should not let ERP vendors define their requirements for them, while the ERP vendor can be consulted on what is the industry standard as implemented in the ERP solution their
